They have chalked<br \/>\ntheir bodies and faces so that when<br \/>\nthey disrobe of their sin<br \/>\nthey\u2019ll be bright as the fish<br \/>\nthat swim far below in the dark.<\/p>\n<p>The voice of the Priest feathers the night,<br \/>\nriding the wheel and rise of the wind.<br \/>\nHe tells us these sinners will soon<br \/>\nbe reborn where the cut-glass glint<br \/>\nof stars show the journeying souls,<br \/>\nall of them freed from the pull<br \/>\nof the earth, none now soiled<br \/>\nbut clean as the slice of the knife<\/p>\n<p>that he uses to cross \u2013 east to west \u2013<br \/>\nthe taut throat of each sinner,<br \/>\nnow naked as ghosts.<br \/>\nWe see the black of their sin<br \/>\nspurt out before his palm, blessing<br \/>\ntheir head, sends them over.<br \/>\n<em>Glory to the Almighty, who furnishes<\/em><br \/>\n<em>their new home,<\/em> he intones<br \/>\nand passes his box around.<br \/>\nWe put in our coin. We go home.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frank Dullaghan<\/strong> is an Irish writer living in Dubai.
