\nFrom the Book of Lost Poems<\/em><\/p>\n
\non this Night of Redemption<\/em>.
\nThe Penitents are all dressed in black.
\nOnly the white of their faces \u2013
\ntheir own small moons \u2013 float
\nto the edge. They have chalked
\ntheir bodies and faces so that when
\nthey disrobe of their sin
\nthey\u2019ll be bright as the fish
\nthat swim far below in the dark.<\/p>\n
\nriding the wheel and rise of the wind.
\nHe tells us these sinners will soon
\nbe reborn where the cut-glass glint
\nof stars show the journeying souls,
\nall of them freed from the pull
\nof the earth, none now soiled
\nbut clean as the slice of the knife<\/p>\n
\nthe taut throat of each sinner,
\nnow naked as ghosts.
\nWe see the black of their sin
\nspurt out before his palm, blessing
\ntheir head, sends them over.
\nGlory to the Almighty, who furnishes<\/em>
\ntheir new home,<\/em> he intones
\nand passes his box around.
\nWe put in our coin. We go home.<\/p>\n
