The dog at the Funeral<\/span>


The dog was unusually quiet,<\/span>
in fact he was out of character.<\/span>

As we prayed the rosary, he watched <\/span>
us loop the beads without snapping<\/span>
in his usual unholy manner.<\/span>

My grandmother played the part of the corpse;<\/span>
she wore an imitation silk shroud,<\/span>
printed with the Holy Virgin on her chest,<\/span>
her hands knotted with even more beads;<\/span>

in fact, there were so many beads it hardly mattered<\/span>
that the dog took some from the dresser <\/span>
(which was posing as an altar);<\/span>

he carried them away<\/span>
and buried them with his bones.<\/span>
