{"id":6140,"date":"2014-01-03T09:00:51","date_gmt":"2014-01-03T09:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=6140"},"modified":"2020-12-14T11:17:33","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T11:17:33","slug":"on-the-tenth-day-of-christmas-chris-michaelides-and-reuben-woolley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/on-the-tenth-day-of-christmas-chris-michaelides-and-reuben-woolley\/","title":{"rendered":"On the tenth day of Christmas&#8230; Chris Michaelides and Reuben Woolley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Seasonal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now that rain reflected lights refract the decorated streets,<\/p>\n<p>with fractured ribbons, shivering through the darkening days,<\/p>\n<p>obscure, tangential, liminal,<\/p>\n<p>this ancient season sinks down into Earth;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">its signs:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">a sharpened flint,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">burnt grain,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">an amber bead.<\/p>\n<p>Concealed by hide of beast and pelt of fox,<\/p>\n<p>fur dew- beaded, falcon &#8211; watched,<\/p>\n<p>its pact with time is held through fire and frost.<\/p>\n<p>The heron flying east and west does not betray<\/p>\n<p>the small and lonely corners of the field and wood and fen<\/p>\n<p>wherein it lays;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">waiting for the turning of the earth,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">the turning of the year,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">the second\u2019s icy turning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Water freezes in the well\u2019s dark depths<\/p>\n<p>and far away a Lullay whimpers in the briars, then is gone,<\/p>\n<p>and standing at the high end of the darkened Hall<\/p>\n<p>we see this season in its truth.<\/p>\n<p>It wears a crown of bone and shale.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chris Michaelides<\/strong> was born in a village that gradually became an outer London suburb. She now lives in as small \u00a0and remote a village in East Anglia as is compatible with the daily journey to work. Music and time to look around are precious.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>us<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>here I am<\/p>\n<p>alone<\/p>\n<p>in a quiet room<\/p>\n<p>writing these words<\/p>\n<p>in a diary I never keep<\/p>\n<p>here alone in December<\/p>\n<p>writing in May<\/p>\n<p>so<\/p>\n<p>obviously<\/p>\n<p>time is not a relevant factor<\/p>\n<p>the when of these words<\/p>\n<p>can be forgotten<\/p>\n<p>but somewhere<\/p>\n<p>there\u2019s you<\/p>\n<p>not here<\/p>\n<p>somewhere else<\/p>\n<p>so place can be factored out as well<\/p>\n<p>it seems<\/p>\n<p>the only significant things<\/p>\n<p>are this ink<\/p>\n<p>on this paper<\/p>\n<p>and your eyes<\/p>\n<p>on these words<\/p>\n<p>your head<\/p>\n<p>my pen<\/p>\n<p>your thoughts<\/p>\n<p>our words<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reuben Woolley<\/strong>: born Chesterfield, 1952, now living in Spain, started writing poetry in 1968 &#8211; 6 poems published in Numbers 2 &#8211; 6 of <em>Candelabrum Magazine,<\/em> Volume1 1971\/72. For reasons he is ashamed to confess, stopped writing in 1980s.
