Little biter!<br \/>\nFire starter!<br \/>\nClick.<br \/>\nWatch the hieroglyphics smoulder.<br \/>\nMoths with flickering antennae rise like ash.<\/p>\n<p>The map must be wrong. So many trees!<br \/>\nHe tears at the bark, consults the Scarabaean<br \/>\nengravings, the ancient pathways.<\/p>\n<p>Foxes gallop past, pulling clouds drawn<br \/>\nthrough flanges of the waning moon.<br \/>\nUnder this dog-yellow sky, tumbling and boiling,<br \/>\ndriven by the ratio of little teeth to vulpine speed,<br \/>\nhe falters, trying to remember, trying to picture<br \/>\nsomething that may have been important.<br \/>\nThe last hounds flop behind him, heaving<br \/>\nand panting.<\/p>\n<p>He spends thirty years eyeballing the beetle<br \/>\nwhile the wife is quietly absorbed in cables of ivy,<br \/>\nin <em>Trentepohlia<\/em> powdering the nearby beech,<br \/>\nblack scraps of <em>nosto<\/em>c, all that remain of her bones.<br \/>\nNeither dares move in the knowledge their world<br \/>\nhas vanished.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jane Lovell<\/strong> lives in Rugby, Warwickshire.
