She pedals when<\/span>
she could coast–<\/span>
bingo, potluck,<\/span>
food bank volunteer.<\/span>
Stopping by our house,<\/span>
she recites her<\/span>
itinerary for the day \u2013<\/span>
cheeks rouged \u2013<\/span>
had muesli, no doubt,<\/span>
for breakfast.<\/span>

We turn the burner<\/span>
down low \u2013<\/span>
politely listen \u2013<\/span>
try to keep<\/span>
the guilty bacon warm<\/span>
until she's gone.<\/span>

SEPARATE DREAMS<\/span>

Sleep comes<\/span>
and separates us<\/span>
like children<\/span>
who've<\/span>
misbehaved.<\/span>

We communicate<\/span>
in secret code<\/span>
with twitching fingers,<\/span>
waiting for morning<\/span>
where we merge<\/span>
again, like<\/span>
beads of mercury<\/span>
from a vintage<\/span>
thermometer.<\/span>
