<\/span>She\u2019s sixtyish, her hair an<br \/>\nunconvincing auburn; his hair and beard are an honest white, but his face less<br \/>\nlined than hers, and I wonder if he\u2019s her husband, or her son.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>She tells the receptionist his name,<br \/>\ntakes a clipboard, sits down beside him to fill out forms. When was your last<br \/>\ndental visit? she says.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>He thinks<br \/>\nabout it, shakes his head slowly.<span style=\"\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Five years? she says.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>He<br \/>\nnods, probably, okay.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>He\u2019s wearing<br \/>\nclean jeans, a long-sleeved denim workshirt with the wrists buttoned.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>He\u2019s not tall, not fat, just thick,<br \/>\nlike he\u2019s laid a lot of block, had a few beers most nights for awhile.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Do your gums bleed? she says. <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>He stares out the window.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Nods.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>She looks up from the clipboard.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Honey, I can\u2019t hear you when you shake your head, she<br \/>\nsays.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>He nods again.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>His eyes are empty.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>She checks something on the clipboard.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>What is your general dental health? she<br \/>\nsays.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>He\u2019s silent, nearly<br \/>\nmotionless, but his thick white hands slowly open, close.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Your dental health, she says again:<br \/>\nPoor?<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>He nods.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>I look away, leaf through the<br \/>\nSmithsonian.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Are you happy, she<br \/>\nsays, with your smile? <br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font size=\"2\"><br \/><span lang=\"EN-US\"><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font size=\"2\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">* Mark Reep&#39;s<\/span> work has appeared in <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">IS&amp;T, Gloom Cupboard, American Art<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> Collector, Endicott Journal, Word Riot<\/span>.
