In Red and White<\/span>
 <\/span>
You could helter-skelter down their columns on a rug or tray,<\/span>
pretend they\u2019re giant sticks of rock in red and white –<\/span>
slice through their middles and you\u2019d surely find<\/span>
the names of places where they stand:<\/span>
Strumble, Needles, Bardsey, Portland Bill.<\/span>
 <\/span>
In the whine of wind you hear the thin bewildered sighs<\/span>
of men whose long-forgotten ghosts drift round<\/span>
the eerie robot systems that transmit the beams.<\/span>
 <\/span>
Men amazed that no-one has to trim or light the lamps.<\/span>

Apple Harvest<\/span>
 <\/span>
Apples cobble the orchard floor;<\/span>
at my feet the zebra\u2019d gold of wasps.<\/span>
 <\/span>
The basket on my hip is full. \u2028I rest it on the table that<\/span>
stands beneath these trees,<\/span>
its grain split like the bursting fruit.<\/span>
 <\/span>
The bones of the basket are brittle.<\/span>
The trees are cragged and bowed,<\/span>
but still each year the wasps come,<\/span>
 <\/span>
lurching from the apples into flight,<\/span>
staggering upwards in the air.<\/span>
