{"id":4875,"date":"2013-07-12T09:00:34","date_gmt":"2013-07-12T09:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=4875"},"modified":"2013-06-30T11:59:39","modified_gmt":"2013-06-30T11:59:39","slug":"annie-pia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/annie-pia\/","title":{"rendered":"Annie Pia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Counting Down<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>10<br \/>\ncounting ten<br \/>\nthe last bus is empty<br \/>\nshe wants to stay<br \/>\nat least the lights are friendly<br \/>\nand she can talk to the driver<\/p>\n<p>9<br \/>\ncounting nine<br \/>\na dark street<br \/>\nnothing can frighten her now<br \/>\nshe watches the clouds<br \/>\ntreads quietly<br \/>\npinpoints the moon<\/p>\n<p>8<br \/>\ncounting eight<br \/>\nagain a lost key<br \/>\nhe answers the door<br \/>\nhello is awkward<\/p>\n<p>7<br \/>\ncounting seven<br \/>\nshe hangs her coat on the staircase<br \/>\nboth hover<br \/>\ngreen tea or red wine?<br \/>\nhow easy is it to sit in her own sitting room?<\/p>\n<p>6<br \/>\ncounting six<br \/>\nwho will she phone<br \/>\ntexting her children<br \/>\nraking up friends<br \/>\nscripting upbeat<\/p>\n<p>5<br \/>\ncounting five<br \/>\nshe fills crates<br \/>\na life&#8217;s journey writ in plastic,frames and gloss finish<br \/>\nmustn&#8217;t look<br \/>\nignore the ghosts<br \/>\na &#8220;good morning&#8221;..<br \/>\nthe postman&#8230;.dogwalkers&#8230;people laughing<br \/>\nlaughing.<\/p>\n<p>4<br \/>\ncounting four<br \/>\nshe marks up property pages<br \/>\ndreams of&#8230;.of not dreaming<br \/>\nof no more questions<\/p>\n<p>3<br \/>\ncounting three<br \/>\nrevising versions of self<br \/>\nwhen is tomorrow?<br \/>\nthis is the one time<br \/>\nshe must not listen to herself<\/p>\n<p>2<br \/>\ncounting two<br \/>\n\u201cwhy don&#8217;t you stand on our own feet&#8230;\u201d<br \/>\nher own feet can&#8217;t hold all of her<br \/>\ncan anyone?<br \/>\nShe moves closer to the corners of her home<br \/>\nwhispers her blue notes to its walls<br \/>\ngathers each room tenderly in the palm of her hand<br \/>\nwhere babies,teenagers and her mother slept once<br \/>\nand a suddenly ageing married woman lay awake<br \/>\nwanting more,wanting it all.<\/p>\n<p>counting one<br \/>\nshe considers the lives she didn\u2019t lead<br \/>\nloosens her grip&#8230;<br \/>\nstop.<br \/>\nGo now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annie Pia<\/strong> returned to writing after a 30 year gap a year ago. She has published in <em>Poetry Scotland<\/em> and <em>Northwords Now Magazine<\/em> and one of her poems was chosen last year for the Stanza International Festival Masterclass.
