Andrea Holland\u2019s winning proposal <em>Broadcasting<\/em> focussed around the war effort in Breckland and what particularly interested the judges was that Andrea wanted to explore almost-forgotten local history.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea writes on her <a href=\"http:\/\/broadcasting-garnering.blogspot.co.uk\/2013\/04\/broadcasting-brief-overview.html\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>: &#8216;The names of villages and the people who had to leave their homes in July 1942 became real to me after my second visit to the Thetford STANTA (Stanford Training Area) military base in May 2012. In a chilly Nissan hut I spent hours staring at black and white photos which had been donated to STANTA by ex-residents; each wall of the room had the name of one of the villages above it: Stanford, West Tofts, Sturston, Tottington, Buckenham Tofts.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that I would have to write about both real and imaginary villagers who gave up their homes and their land, for what would have been described as \u2018the war effort\u2019.\u00a0So in that cold Nissan hut at STANTA, many of the villagers in photos stuck on the walls began to talk to me&#8230;&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are three poems from <em>Broadcasting<\/em>, which is launched this evening at Cafe Writers, Take 5 in Tombland, Norwich.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Broadcasting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Mousehall cottages are asleep with bramble,<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>the pin pricks of a fierce witch riding on the wind.<\/p>\n<p>A wasp knocks at the window, cracked chimneys<\/p>\n<p>whistle in the like of a farmer for his dog.<\/p>\n<p>The bricks shift in their sleep, remembering kitchen<\/p>\n<p>fires and children. The dog at the heels<\/p>\n<p>of an orphan lamb.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Birds and weed sew seed in the crop-less field,<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>hand-stitched into sleep: white bryony, nettles,<\/p>\n<p>fat hen and night shade. We are broadcasting<\/p>\n<p>with them. We are rooted in the sestina of sleep<\/p>\n<p>and seed. The ring of pines which line the fields<\/p>\n<p>watch over thirteen-thousand sheep who ignore<\/p>\n<p>the trees\u2019 summons, <em>come by<\/em>, <em>come by<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rabbit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>for breakfast, a little gritty off the bone<\/p>\n<p>but meat is meat and the rest is for<\/p>\n<p>the chickens and dog.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cold rabbit for lunch and windfalls<\/p>\n<p>a blessing, for afters.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rabbit for supper in a grey stew,<\/p>\n<p>propped up by fat parsnips and potatoes<\/p>\n<p>knuckled with gout.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sinew, pelt, claw and bone: the trap<\/p>\n<p>as provider, above churn or chicken.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The black skins of rabbit lie<\/p>\n<p>across Nana\u2019s knees as the fire<\/p>\n<p>darkens down.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The rabbits dream of warreners,<\/p>\n<p>legs jerking as if already caught by the black<\/p>\n<p>toothed arch.<\/p>\n<p>The warreners dream of rabbits,<\/p>\n<p>fingers jumping as if to ready for the snap<\/p>\n<p>of each small neck.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Five Prepositions at the Village School <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Over:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>five bicycles of seven in the racks<\/p>\n<p>need oil in the chain. Just before playtime,<\/p>\n<p>the roof shakes under machine gun strafe<\/p>\n<p>like freak hail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>the shale-coloured slate the school walls<\/p>\n<p>tremble: They learn the German for punish<\/p>\n<p>is strafe, as in <em>Gott Strafe England<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Between:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>pale lidded desks, amongst inkwells stained<\/p>\n<p>with the knowledge of blue, children continue<\/p>\n<p>their sums: Adding up and subtraction is easy,<\/p>\n<p>division is more difficult for some.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Against:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>the cloakroom door, a boy touches the waist<\/p>\n<p>of a nervous girl; his father is in France,<\/p>\n<p>in six weeks time their house will be empty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Across:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>the playground, boys count empty casings<\/p>\n<p>and girls cartwheel home, both firmly<\/p>\n<p>located in space and time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrea Holland<\/strong>\u2019s first collection <em>Borrowed<\/em> was published by Smith\/Doorstop Press.\u00a0 She was a runner-up for the 2010 Mslexia poetry competition. She also writes short stories and has been commissioned to work with visual artists for several collaborative projects, including for the Norfolk &amp; Norwich Festival, and for Creative Arts East.
