{"id":4679,"date":"2013-06-16T09:00:33","date_gmt":"2013-06-16T09:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=4679"},"modified":"2013-06-04T11:41:46","modified_gmt":"2013-06-04T11:41:46","slug":"jean-cardy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/jean-cardy\/","title":{"rendered":"Jean Cardy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Denizens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mice live in the London Tube.<br \/>\nA train leaves<br \/>\nand small pieces of sooty black<br \/>\ndetach themselves<br \/>\nfrom the sooty black walls<br \/>\nand forage for crumbs<br \/>\nin the rubbish under the rails<br \/>\nthat are death to man.<br \/>\nYou can\u2019t see their feet move.<br \/>\nThey scurry like clockwork mice<br \/>\nand then they accelerate<br \/>\nfaster than any clockwork mouse,<br \/>\nfaster than the eye can follow.<br \/>\nYour eye jerks to keep up with them.<br \/>\nThere are usually three.<br \/>\nYou can tell when a commuter has spotted one;<br \/>\nhe becomes alert, alive &#8211;<br \/>\nit makes you realize the half-world<br \/>\nthe other passengers exist in.<br \/>\nOnce, a mouse came onto the platform<br \/>\nand sat, cleaning his whiskers,<br \/>\nwatched by a silent circle<br \/>\nof respectful giants,<br \/>\ntall as Nelson\u2019s column.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jean Cardy<\/strong> has had three collections and many poems published .\u00a0 She currently teaches Creative Writing for U3A.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Denizens Mice live in the London Tube.
