{"id":4391,"date":"2013-04-25T08:15:48","date_gmt":"2013-04-25T08:15:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=4391"},"modified":"2013-05-01T15:10:01","modified_gmt":"2013-05-01T15:10:01","slug":"william-ogden-haynes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/william-ogden-haynes\/","title":{"rendered":"William Ogden Haynes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Autopsy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below the towering one hundred foot<br \/>\ncanopy of river oaks and an understory of dogwoods<br \/>\nis the brown skeleton of a dead hydrangea.<br \/>\nThere is no doubt of its morbidity<br \/>\nsince tweaking a branch<br \/>\nresults in a resounding crack.<br \/>\nWhen she planted it, the gardener hoped<br \/>\nthe bush would be large and green<br \/>\nwith beautiful mophead blooms<br \/>\nas the picture on the carton promised.<\/p>\n<p>But now she sits in the yard on a folding chair<br \/>\ndrinking a glass of red wine.<br \/>\nShe regards the dead shrub,<br \/>\nwondering how it, and so many others,<br \/>\nhad slipped away under her care.<br \/>\nPerhaps a maladjusted sprinkler head<br \/>\nhovered over it for too long<br \/>\nor missed its target altogether.<br \/>\nToo much sunlight or persistent shade<br \/>\nmight have been the culprit.<\/p>\n<p>Or was it an accidental errant spray of herbicide<br \/>\nintended for the invading privet?<br \/>\nIt might have fallen prey to an infestation<br \/>\nof spider mites, whiteflies or caterpillars.<br \/>\nAnd we mustn\u2019t forget the possibilities<br \/>\nof overmulching, root rot, or poor soil composition.<br \/>\nGod forbid, it could have been the victim<br \/>\nof a visit from the dreaded nematode.<\/p>\n<p>Or, was it unhealthy from the start?<br \/>\nA runt of a plant destined for an early demise<br \/>\nno matter how good the care.<br \/>\nAs she looked at the dead shrub<br \/>\ntaking her last sip of Merlot,<br \/>\nshe had the strangest thought.<br \/>\nA poor gardener is nothing more<br \/>\nthan a twisted gravedigger,<br \/>\nwho buries the living<br \/>\nand has no belief in eternal life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>William Ogden Haynes<\/strong> is a poet and author of short fiction from Alabama who was born in Michigan and grew up a military brat. \u00a0His book of poetry entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/147766775X\/ref=nosim?tag=inswte0f-21\" target=\"_blank\">Points of Interest <\/a>appeared in 2012 and is available on Amazon. \u00a0He has published nearly forty poems and short stories in literary journals and his work has been anthologized multiple times. \u00a0In a prior life he taught speech-language pathology at Auburn University and authored six major professional textbooks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; Autopsy Below the towering one hundred foot canopy of river oaks and an understory of dogwoods is the brown skeleton of a dead hydrangea.
