{"id":4384,"date":"2013-04-24T09:00:48","date_gmt":"2013-04-24T09:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=4384"},"modified":"2013-04-21T11:42:26","modified_gmt":"2013-04-21T11:42:26","slug":"ottilie-mulzet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/ottilie-mulzet\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottilie Mulzet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Letters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I<br \/>\nCan you hear the leaves as they fall<br \/>\nas they hit the ground with a thump<br \/>\nthe stomach, teeth, legs, and heads<br \/>\nfalling from the branches<\/p>\n<p>of language that can no longer hold them<br \/>\nthe curling loops undone<br \/>\nin that Hell, the trees&#8217; leaves sharp blades<br \/>\ncutting mercilessly every Word<\/p>\n<p>which lie there on the ground bleeding<br \/>\nthe severed legs, stomach, teeth and heads<br \/>\nthat when assembled looked so alive<br \/>\nthe Gods gathered above in the sky<\/p>\n<p>II<br \/>\nof the manuscript, gathered there<br \/>\nlike a storm, the same word repeated<br \/>\nburqan burqan burqan<br \/>\nGod covers you, wraps you all up in edicts<\/p>\n<p>and robes, with two tiny slits for your eyes<br \/>\nand the words hanging down from the tree<br \/>\nlike the robes handed down by your mother<br \/>\nthe manuscript you could not read<\/p>\n<p>because the letters went the wrong way<br \/>\nlike stakes driven into the ground<br \/>\nthe words lay there mute, already buried,<br \/>\npronounced dead, must be given funeral rites \u2014<\/p>\n<p>III<br \/>\neven more elaborate than for the highest priest<br \/>\nor maybe as nourishment for the fire<br \/>\nabove is God with his bamboo pen<br \/>\nwriting on cheap Russian paper<\/p>\n<p>because even He couldn&#8217;t tell what he had to buy<br \/>\nwhen at the market, the paper made from rice,<br \/>\npaper is paper, He thought, and made His offer<br \/>\nthe world is not a sheet of paper<\/p>\n<p>but the gods are gathered there up there like a cloud<br \/>\nlike a storm when it\u2019s said that their voice is heard<br \/>\nthe letters following to the ground<br \/>\nthe Wrath of the Lord raining down<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ottilie Mulzet<\/strong> translates from Hungarian and Mongolian.
