One for the Road<\/span>

The headlights beam into the dark, <\/span>
illuminating silence the vehicle moves into,<\/span>

distant till it dopplers past, a fan of light<\/span>
that breaks upon a sky so full of stars<\/span>

it\u2019s nothing but the swipe of us<\/span>
intruding for a moment on the pitch of night<\/span>

much as a match flares till it\u2019s shaken out,<\/span>
or as we try to make our mark <\/span>

but stumble, spill its substance, light up <\/span>
our surroundings only briefly, see <\/span>

there\u2019s nothing more than we\u2019d steered into, <\/span>
find we\u2019re fumbling for the map.<\/span>
