{"id":4261,"date":"2013-04-07T09:00:01","date_gmt":"2013-04-07T09:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=4261"},"modified":"2013-04-07T09:07:02","modified_gmt":"2013-04-07T09:07:02","slug":"gill-mcevoy-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/gill-mcevoy-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Gill McEvoy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gathering<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We always knew the months Orion would be clear above our roofs,<\/p>\n<p>the years the damson trees would yield a heavy crop.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We knew when geese would split the skies and flocks<\/p>\n<p>of field-fares arrive to strip the berries from our trees,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>the time for harvesting, the holly\u2019s ripening,<\/p>\n<p>the time of wood-smoke and the sawing of logs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We never thought that we\u2019d no longer read<\/p>\n<p>the seasons as we used to do &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>not know when to plant and when to sow,<\/p>\n<p>nor what would prosper in the endless days of rain,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>nor when the date of gathering might be<\/p>\n<p>(one meagre week of sun, and so much to be done).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We look up at uncertain skies, wring our hands,<\/p>\n<p>and ask each other\u00a0 \u2018What\u2019s to come?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gill McEvoy<\/strong> is a Hawthornden Fellow.
