Sometimes when I miss you<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n I buy bananas<\/p>\n and I don\u2019t mind if they\u2019re unripe and stick<\/p>\n to the roof of my mouth.\u00a0 I picture you – empty<\/p>\n purse in one hand, birthday bunch for mother<\/p>\n in the other \u2013 smack against a father raging<\/p>\n at your injudicious purchase; the imprudence<\/p>\n of your short-term thinking; the criminal waste.<\/p>\n The story was only of the judge\u2019s fury.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I never thought to ask who tasted the exotic fruits,<\/p>\n how they looked (what shade of yellow, for example)<\/p>\n and whether they were sweet or puffy dry?<\/p>\n Was each one shared?\u00a0 Did you eke them out<\/p>\n because of him until the last was shrivelled,<\/p>\n dark and weeping in a corner of your kitchen?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n (Published in 14 Magazine, Issue 13, Spring 2012)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Following careers as a copy editor, juggler and woodcarver, Julia O\u2019Brien<\/strong> relishes her new work as a casual library assistant in Lewes and nearby seaside towns.
