{"id":4088,"date":"2013-02-26T09:00:08","date_gmt":"2013-02-26T09:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=4088"},"modified":"2013-02-12T16:43:26","modified_gmt":"2013-02-12T16:43:26","slug":"suzanne-scarfone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/suzanne-scarfone\/","title":{"rendered":"Suzanne Scarfone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Walking in Sound<br \/>\n<\/strong> <em>Life is pleasant. \u00a0Life is good.<\/em> \u00a0Virginia Woolf, <em>The Waves<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nA simple life is not quiet<\/p>\n<p>take an August afternoon<\/p>\n<p>on a street near your home<\/p>\n<p>tumbling red roses<\/p>\n<p>sap rushing everywhere and<\/p>\n<p>birds telling tales in trees<\/p>\n<p>going on and on and on and on<\/p>\n<p>a blue river seems to swoon<\/p>\n<p>between the clouds<\/p>\n<p>people breathe in a house<\/p>\n<p>a dog twitches<\/p>\n<p>once or twice a lost soul<\/p>\n<p>rustles the curtains looking<\/p>\n<p>for a way in or out<\/p>\n<p>as the dead do when it\u2019s hot<\/p>\n<p>all the seas in the world twirl<\/p>\n<p>swirl around you<\/p>\n<p>and then there\u2019s the roaring<\/p>\n<p>spin of the earth<\/p>\n<p>you have to press a palm flat<\/p>\n<p>on your chest and jump<\/p>\n<p>into the regular thud of yourself<\/p>\n<p>the children next door look up<\/p>\n<p>mouths open<\/p>\n<p>sighing at something<\/p>\n<p>as you walk home<\/p>\n<p>in the summer air<\/p>\n<p>a grotto of sound<\/p>\n<p>irregular and<\/p>\n<p>solemn<\/p>\n<p>sings to you<\/p>\n<p>all the way<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Detroit poet, <strong>Suzanne Scarfone<\/strong>, is a creative writing professor with the <a href=\"http:\/\/awwproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Afghan Women&#8217;s Writing Project<\/a>, as well as writer-in-residence with InsideOut Literary Arts Project.
