{"id":4069,"date":"2013-02-21T09:00:44","date_gmt":"2013-02-21T09:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=4069"},"modified":"2013-02-12T15:24:13","modified_gmt":"2013-02-12T15:24:13","slug":"ian-mcewen-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/ian-mcewen-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Ian McEwen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Implantations (sycamore)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nobody tells them this,<br \/>\nnobody says<br \/>\nit\u2019s time to uncurl<br \/>\nthe fat green clocksprings<br \/>\nof their hearts and no one<br \/>\ninvited them to do it here,<br \/>\nthe order of it unexplained<br \/>\nuntaught, the hunt for light<br \/>\nthe root for damp,<br \/>\nhow it happens all at once<br \/>\nsynchronised and swimming up<br \/>\nthe purest gesture they can name<br \/>\nopening their cotyledon arms<br \/>\nblowing on so-pink-they\u2019re-artificial stems,<br \/>\nthey press into the unexpected air<br \/>\nnot knowing not to expect<br \/>\nnot knowing not to<br \/>\nnot knowing<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Implantations (beech mast)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nobody dropped them here,<br \/>\nnobody put<br \/>\ntheir hooked and hungry<br \/>\neaks across the path and no one<br \/>\nasked their clicking tongues<br \/>\nfor gossip on each step,<br \/>\nor compelled the jostle<br \/>\nfor attention in their spikes:<br \/>\ntriangular or angular<br \/>\ndiscomforts to each other, each blind<br \/>\npercussion barren as the next.<br \/>\nA harsh nostalgia for the tightest<br \/>\nvowel their teeth can bite<br \/>\nrattling their vacant husks,<br \/>\nscolding us at every turn,<br \/>\nnot hearing<br \/>\nnot hearing themselves<br \/>\nnot hearing themselves hurt<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Implantations (cartridge paper)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nothing is so ready.<br \/>\nNothing spreads<br \/>\nitself so wide, so thick,<br \/>\nso deeper than the earth and fatter<br \/>\nthan the air, eager in each fibre<br \/>\nso to blot itself and suck<br \/>\ngive suck through all this fickle<br \/>\ncapillarity so to spot itself<br \/>\nwith any homing seed or smut<br \/>\nthat drifts in through the clouds,<br \/>\nthe thunderheads<br \/>\nof blood and falling in<br \/>\nso smally, small<br \/>\nas satan on his long long drop<br \/>\nagainst the parapets<br \/>\nof heaven.<br \/>\nNot waiting but not reaching up<br \/>\nnot waiting but not reaching<br \/>\nnot waiting but<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ian McEwen<\/strong>\u2019s pamphlet <em>The Stammering Man<\/em> was a winner in the Templar competition 2010 and he was highly commended in the national poetry competition 2011.
