{"id":3994,"date":"2013-02-10T09:00:37","date_gmt":"2013-02-10T09:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=3994"},"modified":"2013-01-08T12:20:27","modified_gmt":"2013-01-08T12:20:27","slug":"john-murphy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/john-murphy\/","title":{"rendered":"John Murphy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is Not a Poem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You have a child,<br \/>\na baby just learning to walk<br \/>\nand he wears a blue snowsuit.<br \/>\nHe moves across the frost-tinged<br \/>\ngrass, each faltering step seems<br \/>\nto wobble all through his body<br \/>\nup to his head and then suddenly<br \/>\nhe sits as if with a purpose.<br \/>\nYou run to him and lift him under<br \/>\nhis arms and set him on his way again.<br \/>\nYou picture this and feel it\u2019s one<br \/>\nmemory that won\u2019t fade even if you<br \/>\nwant it to , which you don\u2019t.<br \/>\nYou feel also you don\u2019t want<br \/>\nto \u00a0get too lyrical, use words to lull<br \/>\nwith a rhythm of their own beyond<br \/>\npictures so solid in your existence.<br \/>\nYou also feel that metaphors are too<br \/>\ncute as are similes, like a freshly washed<br \/>\nand powdered baby, cute but not<br \/>\ngoing anywhere. You picture<br \/>\nyour baby, the one in the snowsuit,<br \/>\nthe real one who exists way above<br \/>\nany reason to shape words into<br \/>\nan experience of him, and thank<br \/>\nall that is dear to you that these words<br \/>\nare enough, all that is needed to<br \/>\nbe enough to picture him walking<br \/>\nfor the first time across the grass<br \/>\naway from you, hand outstretched<br \/>\nto grab at the family cat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Murphy<\/strong> is a retired lecturer in English and American literature and creative writing.
