adonis<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Thursday morning in Walthamstow<\/p>\n Opens its eyes on a puzzle of<\/p>\n Back gardens<\/p>\n Limp washing lines and paths<\/p>\n Hidden by upswept petals.<\/p>\n The ash tray flower pot<\/p>\n Is mounting a resistance<\/p>\n The kettle is not yet set to boil<\/p>\n But it glows<\/p>\n In the semi-dark<\/p>\n Quietly.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Against a backdrop of bleak plants<\/p>\n netted sky<\/p>\n and a speckling of alarm blips<\/p>\n our George Orwell anti-hero<\/p>\n Begins to thumb the novel of his day<\/p>\n while<\/p>\n listening to the radio mumble disasters;<\/p>\n <\/p>\n a cloud of gas spotted over the North Sea,<\/p>\n bombs, storms and soured milk.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Last night you drank the grappa from the reproduction bottle<\/p>\n after cycling home on a rented bike.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n For a fleeting moment<\/p>\n between Clerkenwell and Old Street<\/p>\n you were free<\/p>\n feeling the wind in your heels like no<\/p>\n civil servant before you<\/p>\n your pea coat caught a gush of breeze<\/p>\n and you felt the wing tips of destiny.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This morning<\/p>\n the sky is balding and the clouds are limp<\/p>\n a glassy man, once a god full of booze,<\/p>\n lies tossed and empty by your shoes.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Edwina Attlee<\/strong> is a writer and researcher currently undertaking a PhD at the London Consortium.
