I knew them<br \/>\nby touch. My white hands<br \/>\npressed against your hard belly,<\/p>\n<p>clawing your ribs, unable<br \/>\nto shift the weight of you.<br \/>\nI felt those ridges, moist<br \/>\ncrevices. I feel them now.<\/p>\n<p>You came again last night,<br \/>\nbreathing very hard.<br \/>\nOur adult legs entwined, muscular,<br \/>\nthe fig and the palm.<\/p>\n<p>The strangler who feeds on the modified<br \/>\ngrass. The trunk bears it up<br \/>\nuntil the vine consumes the pith<br \/>\nand stands, for a time, alone.<\/p>\n<p>How have you grown,<br \/>\nyou dark, twisted girl?<br \/>\nHow have you met me here,<br \/>\nin power and force?<\/p>\n<p>I cut you off,<br \/>\npressed you down.<br \/>\nI sliced you from me, tore<br \/>\nyour teeth from my skin.<\/p>\n<p>And still, you come.<br \/>\nShuddering against me,<br \/>\nwhich death are you dying,<br \/>\ndo you hunger or feed?<\/p>\n<p>My daemon, my ghost,<br \/>\nthe twin that I buried, clawing up<br \/>\nfrom the soil. Keeping their roots,<br \/>\nthe palm tree, the fig.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bethany W Pope<\/strong> is an\u00a0award\u00a0winning\u00a0author of the LBA, and a finalist for the Faulkner-Wisdom\u00a0Awards. She received her PhD from Aberystwyth University\u2019s Creative Writing program.
