The grey light hurts.<\/p>\n<p>At night, rehearsing his own lines &#8211;<br \/>\nmemoir, novels &#8211; he is word<\/p>\n<p>perfect. After the performance<br \/>\na hushed procession wends<\/p>\n<p>towards him and each advancing celebrant<br \/>\ndrops their gaze,<\/p>\n<p>suddenly shy to lay before him<br \/>\ntheir unread offering. One swift flourish<\/p>\n<p>and he\u2019s marked the pristine page<br \/>\nwith a blue-black emblem,<\/p>\n<p>raising his head, briefly, to show those<br \/>\neyes.<\/p>\n<p>The people find him gracious; but gods,<br \/>\nwhen they grow old, crave<\/p>\n<p>adoration.
