{"id":3889,"date":"2013-01-09T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2013-01-09T09:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=3889"},"modified":"2013-01-06T13:50:09","modified_gmt":"2013-01-06T13:50:09","slug":"mary-noonan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/mary-noonan\/","title":{"rendered":"Mary Noonan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eduardo\u2019s<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>In a restaurant made from the thin arms<br \/>\nof a tree embracing white-washed walls,<br \/>\nI eat strips of duck and strands of almond<br \/>\nprepared by a stooped Belgian gentleman.<br \/>\nA wall of glass separates me from him,<br \/>\nand within this wall swim miniature<br \/>\ntropical fish, all black and red stripes,<br \/>\nmother-of-pearl and orange polka dots.<br \/>\nThe fish and I go eyeball-to-eyeball,<br \/>\nthe tip of my nose touching<br \/>\nthe bumpy nodules atop each flat face<br \/>\nand the gauzy fins billowing<br \/>\nand flicking as they whirr past my ear,<br \/>\nup and down the watery wall.<br \/>\nI dive into a Douro red and the flashy fish<br \/>\nand the silver-haired Belgian and I swim<br \/>\ninto and out of each other. He slices pink duck-<br \/>\nbreast and flamb\u00e9s raspberries in vodka<br \/>\nand the thin brown arms of the tree squeeze<br \/>\nus closer and the chalky fringe<br \/>\nof the low ceiling blanches the top<br \/>\nof my head.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mary Noonan<\/strong> lives in Cork.
