New York Stopover, 1966<\/span>
for my mother<\/span>
 <\/span>
At 93, she recalls what I don\u2019t: steam <\/span>
blooming from pavements \u2013<\/span>
 <\/span>
(loud crack in the afternoon and immediately  <\/span>
the steep up-and-down wail <\/span>
of American sirens, faces half-borrowed from movies: <\/span>
the lean dark-haired man in the rumpled shirt <\/span>
muscled out in handcuffs \u2013 cursing? <\/span>
someone has put him on mute \u2013  the older, inert<\/span>
jewellery-shopkeeper on a stretcher, <\/span>
passers by passing, sirens again, the incident <\/span>
gathering itself and rolling off <\/span>
to curve round a different bend on the same circuit)<\/span>
 <\/span>
\u2013 the same steam <\/span>
              I woke to a decade later, dream-washed <\/span>
in <\/span>Taxi Driver<\/span>\u2019s neon-and-brimstone.<\/span>
