{"id":3694,"date":"2012-12-10T18:09:18","date_gmt":"2012-12-10T18:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=3694"},"modified":"2012-12-10T18:09:18","modified_gmt":"2012-12-10T18:09:18","slug":"laura-elizabeth-woollett","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/laura-elizabeth-woollett\/","title":{"rendered":"Laura Elizabeth Woollett"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Baptism<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nI do not want to be born anew<br \/>\nI do not want to be washed clean<\/p>\n<p>Stepping past the broken reeds<br \/>\nmy toes are curled<br \/>\nmy path is silt<\/p>\n<p>I will not be reborn<\/p>\n<p>Rude warmth of freshwater<br \/>\njellyfishes my gown<br \/>\nI swell with the shame<br \/>\nof pissed-in swimming pools<\/p>\n<p>I will never be reborn<\/p>\n<p>He towers out of waters<br \/>\nRugged, regal,<br \/>\nwith hands splayed, saying<br \/>\n\u2018Come, my daughter,\u2019<\/p>\n<p>as icy currents part my legs<br \/>\nand dirt-eels squirm at my ankles<\/p>\n<p>I will never be washed clean<\/p>\n<p>Ruddy from a day of soul-saving<br \/>\nThe type of man who burns most easily<br \/>\nWith sunflowers for eyes:<br \/>\nflecks of gold<br \/>\non a sky of blue-hazel<\/p>\n<p>When my man takes me in arms<br \/>\nI want to cry out<br \/>\nThere is too much silence<br \/>\nIn the lapping of black waters,<br \/>\nblue-reflecting<\/p>\n<p>My hand trails over lake-skin \u2013<br \/>\na benediction<br \/>\nor farewell to this world of things<\/p>\n<p>The dull fire of auburn trees<br \/>\nThe swirl of white smoke in cold air<br \/>\nA host of white robes, newly blessed,<br \/>\nbeam and clasp their hands at me<\/p>\n<p>Before this day is up,<br \/>\nI\u2019ll see his face<br \/>\nthe slow movement of priestly lips<br \/>\nand a man\u2019s tongue,<br \/>\npinkly curling over teeth<\/p>\n<p>The stolen nose,<br \/>\nthe blessing murmur,<br \/>\nand the violence of plunged head<br \/>\nMy lungs are filled with cold filth<\/p>\n<p>I think I\u2019ll feel him above me forever<br \/>\nHis face, swimming in broken sunlight<br \/>\nand that watery panic<br \/>\nbefore the break of surface<br \/>\nthe clinging of wet gown to breast<\/p>\n<p>No cleaner,<br \/>\njust panting for my life.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laura Elizabeth Woollett<\/strong> lives in Melbourne, Australia.
