Cuckoo Sister<\/span>
 <\/span>
Your mother named you Denise Florence:<\/span>
a pencil shavings, navy knickers, inky fingered name.<\/span>

I bounce the syllables on my tongue: they taste<\/span>
of sherbet lemon; I roll them between my fingertips:<\/span>
the grit of salt and vinegar crisps pricks my paper cuts. <\/span>

Our mother called you Catherine Francesca:<\/span>
a dulcimer playing, Titian beauty, satin ballgown name.<\/span>

Like a bridemaid\u2019s dress that cuts into your armpits,<\/span>
it never quite fitted.  <\/span>

The tightrope between your names stretches taut<\/span>
as a cheese wire.  I have watched you wobble, tumble, <\/span>
then climb, remount.<\/span>

 Oh, my sister, let me bind your wounded feet.<\/span>
