I couldn\u2019t understand,<\/p>\n<p>although you drew a diagram<\/p>\n<p>to show that two parallel lines,<\/p>\n<p>if left to run forever, will eventually meet.<\/p>\n<p>Remember when she came home<\/p>\n<p>crying the next day covered in shame.<\/p>\n<p>In front of everyone her teacher<\/p>\n<p>had dismissed her father\u2019s proof.<\/p>\n<p>But I believe you. If you and I had never met<\/p>\n<p>that rainy night in Camden Town,<\/p>\n<p>if that night had never been,<\/p>\n<p>that\u2019s where we\u2019d be, each walking the line<\/p>\n<p>towards infinity, searching for the place<\/p>\n<p>where the impossible can happen<\/p>\n<p>and two parallel lines collide.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jacqueline Saphra<\/strong>&#8216;s first collection, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/1905233329\/ref=nosim?tag=inswte0f-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Kitchen of Lovely Contraptions<\/em> <\/a>(flipped eye), developed with the support of The Arts Council of England, was shortlisted for the Aldeburgh First Collection Prize 2011.\u00a0 &#8216;Geometry&#8217; appears in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/1905233329\/ref=nosim?tag=inswte0f-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Kitchen of Lovely Contraptions<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ring of Fire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s lost track of her many hiding places<\/p>\n<p>winter coat pocket\u00a0\u00a0 trunk of summer outfits<\/p>\n<p>under the stairs\u00a0\u00a0 behind the royal wedding plate<\/p>\n<p>television or sofa cushions\u00a0\u00a0 amidst tins<\/p>\n<p>of tomatoes and chicken soup\u00a0\u00a0 school pleats<\/p>\n<p>and towels waiting to be washed and ironed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She has tucked a poem into each bottle<\/p>\n<p>like a cry for rescue washing up on shore<\/p>\n<p>explaining why the house is mottled<\/p>\n<p>in pink and green\u00a0\u00a0 why she\u2019s pilfered<\/p>\n<p>pocket money\u00a0\u00a0 why her man needs throttling<\/p>\n<p>for all the promises he\u2019s never delivered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In hopes of quitting she tries weekly meetings<\/p>\n<p>but each time leaves high off the fumes<\/p>\n<p>the others have breathed. Back home she opens<\/p>\n<p>another\u00a0\u00a0 the rhymes coming fast and furious<\/p>\n<p>how the black ducks strut out of the pen<\/p>\n<p>like a gaggle of aunties on their way to a funeral<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>how foxes prey upon the guinea fowl<\/p>\n<p>each night while the cock keeps his hens<\/p>\n<p>in line\u00a0\u00a0 fields are allowed to lie fallow<\/p>\n<p>ponies unable to bear the children<\/p>\n<p>are sold on\u00a0\u00a0 like a paper boat caught in the flow<\/p>\n<p>of the stream to the canal and beyond\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Giddy as a schoolgirl bouncing off walls<\/p>\n<p>she has the sudden strength to muck out stables<\/p>\n<p>and silage the grain\u00a0 to write a poem that will<\/p>\n<p>sell so well she can put aside this terrible<\/p>\n<p>habit and live a peaceful life \u00a0\u00a0no delay<\/p>\n<p>to having dinner ready and waiting on the table.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Home from school the children find her<\/p>\n<p>passed out on the floor encircled in an array<\/p>\n<p>of bottles like a protective ring of fire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charles Lauder<\/strong> Jr&#8217;s poems have appeared internationally, including such journals as <em>Stand<\/em>,<em> Poetry Salzburg Review<\/em>, <em>The SHOp<\/em>, <em>California Quarterly<\/em>, <em>Texas Observer<\/em>, <em>Agenda<\/em>, <em>Poetry Nottingham International<\/em>, <em>Hearing Voices<\/em>, and <em>Under the Radar<\/em>.
