The 2012 Aldeburgh Poetry Festival runs for the 2nd-4th November,\u00a0 and this week\u00a0 Ink Sweat & Tears will be featuring poems on the theme \u2018Poetry as a Lifeline\u2019 which is the subject of the IS&T-supported Discussions and Short Takes this year.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Find out more about the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival here<\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Reading James Schuyler<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Silver day, how shall I polish you?<\/p>\n or rather \u2018Silver day\/ how shall I polish you?\u2019,<\/p>\n the line break clicks in but if you start<\/p>\n <\/p>\n thinking about it, the poetry<\/p>\n bursts like a soap bubble. You can buy<\/p>\n a machine to blow bubbles now;<\/p>\n <\/p>\n the kids all walk straight past it,<\/p>\n bored. But the whole world<\/p>\n was reflected in that bubble, the whole<\/p>\n <\/p>\n wobbling, fragile world. Polish.<\/p>\n My dad was a polisher. Saturdays<\/p>\n were Cardinal days. He\u2019d get a blob<\/p>\n <\/p>\n of pink wax out of the tin and rub it in.<\/p>\n Even at the end, the ingrained skill<\/p>\n was there. You\u2019d have thought<\/p>\n <\/p>\n they were just sharing the chores<\/p>\n but she\u2019d given him that to do because<\/p>\n he was one of those ducks<\/p>\n <\/p>\n that follows you for life.<\/p>\n Now she\u2019s older than he ever knew<\/p>\n and someone else is paid to do the cleaning.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I\u2019ve got no duster<\/p>\n but I\u2019m going to buff this silver day<\/p>\n till I can see my face in it.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n
