In the Year of Splitting Up<\/span>

Like the man who lived eleven days awake <\/span>
we were always on a knife blade<\/span>
of sleep. Afraid, in the slack space <\/span>
of a blink it would be over. We portioned <\/span>
the hours like watchmen, served out <\/span>
our time on uncomfortable chairs. <\/span>

These were savage nights as we avoided <\/span>
thoughts of mattresses, sex. Our storm <\/span>
honed its leading edge, our bones stung <\/span>
with the effort of not touching, <\/span>
wanting to unlip themselves from hooks <\/span>
of skin, their voices, like the white light<\/span>
we used to hear when we lay down together, <\/span>
when we lay down, together, burning.<\/span>
