Spinning Plates <\/span>
 <\/span>
My mother was mad as mercury,<\/span>
mad as a silken Disraeli stovepipe<\/span>
hat hiding a gypsum-white rabbit. <\/span>
 <\/span>
She once told me, the malt talking,<\/span>
that I wasn't her first born boy,<\/span>
there had been seminal drafts.<\/span>
 <\/span>
She said that being pregnant <\/span>
was like spinning a bone-china plate<\/span>
on the thinnest stick inside you.<\/span>
 <\/span>
Breakages were bound to occur.<\/span>
It was a question of which piece <\/span>
could drop intact and roll around<\/span>
 <\/span>
on a hardwood floor, its rim ringing<\/span>
with cries. My sister is an artisan  <\/span>
firing, a wild coloured plate <\/span>
 <\/span>
still atwirl. I am a white canteen <\/span>
saucer, ready to be tanned with tea-<\/span>
slops. A cupped palm for spillages.<\/span>
