tomorrow\u2019s rain huddled<\/span>
beneath the plane<\/span>

England a thread unravelling<\/span>
into the Irish Sea<\/span>

a man in \u2018departures\u2019 made<\/span>
an Arthur Miller script of goodbye<\/span>

his wife whispering how it is only a month; <\/span>
some men in history have slept for longer<\/span>


ii) ships in the night<\/span>

I saw Ferlinghetti;<\/span>
he looked like an eccentric trainer<\/span>
                of big cats<\/span>
and carried the weight of a small island<\/span>
                in his breath<\/span>

no sorrow is so bad, Lawrence, <\/span>
                as that which quite goes by<\/span>


vi) Chicago<\/span>

this has been:<\/span>

the sun was the face of the man<\/span>
in the American Gothic painting<\/span>

a waitress had a voice like cold coffee<\/span>
the day sweated<\/span>

the day wrung itself out and left<\/span>
itself to dry between the streets<\/span>

a homeless man played jazz; pigeons scattered<\/span>
into the iron rafters of the El Train<\/span>


viii) New York City, stage directions<\/span>

\/squinting eye of the streets<\/span>
 wind moves like an elegant dress\/<\/span>

\/down the backs of young men, sweat<\/span>
 makes new peninsulas\/<\/span>

\/the half-light of a corner deli<\/span>
a man running with a bouquet of flowers;<\/span>
the last hope of the city\/<\/span>
