Laundry<\/span>

Here in the Indian foothills, <\/span>
I share a house with a man from Greece<\/span>

who speaks no English perfectly,<\/span>
disappears for days on a motorbike,<\/span>

leaves his laundry on the low make-shift line, <\/span>
grieving an absent sun.<\/span>

Side by side they hang: his shirt, my summer dress<\/span>
as if they know each other well<\/span>

and when he returns, smelling of engine oil,<\/span>
monsoon, rolled brown cigarettes, <\/span>

we have no formal language<\/span>
to share our separate joy.<\/span>

Drip-drip on the balcony, <\/span>
a queer, white pool gathers below.<\/span>

He holds at a sleeve, looks to sky.<\/span>
I open my palm for signs of rain.<\/span>
