I like leaving the house for a designated space, and my wife, novelist Lesley Glaister, likes me out of the house when she is writing. Poetry tends to happen anywhere \u2013 bed, train journey \u2013 and goes longhand into a notebook \u2013 to be revisited in the garden shed.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">2. How do you write?<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"> (into a notebook or straight onto a computer?) <\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">See above. Prose I mostly write straight onto computer. I am slightly surprised this works for me. I now find my handwriting distractingly bad. I revise by printing out, hand editing, then entering changes.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">3. Roughly how much time do you spend each week on creative writing related activities?<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"> (writing, editing, correspondence &amp; submissions) <\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">I would guess about 30 hours. But once you count in email and YouTube\u2026<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">4. What time of day do you usually write?<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">&nbsp;Hard prose work from c. 9.30 to lunch. Admin and revise in afternoon. Poetry whenever it presents itself \u2013 often early morning in bed.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">5. What does it feel like to write?<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Lit up, turned on, tuned in, properly alive. When it works, it\u2019s the only time I feel intelligent and interesting to myself. Life moves from problem to topic. <\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">6. Are there any stimuli that will usually trigger you into writing?<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Nothing reliable, but walking or reading someone else I\u2019m into, often does it. It\u2019s a palpably different way of attending to the inner and outer world. It\u2019s a shift out of yourself.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">7. What are you working on now?<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">&nbsp;Poetry. <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">After At the Loch of the Green Corrie<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"> I have nothing much left to say in prose (I hope that changes). Revising poems for autumn 2011 Bloodaxe collection <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">As Though We Were Flying<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">. Also a book-length sequence of poems that came very quickly last autumn, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Found At Sea<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"> will need looking at after a break. But other new poems still coming \u2013 the latest ones out of illness-induced insomnia. Multiple drafts of three of them are on my table here.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><\/p>\n<p><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/andrew-greig.weebly.com\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">*Andrew Greig&nbsp; <\/span><\/a><\/font><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">has published eight collections of poetry, most of these with Bloodaxe, including <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">The Order of the Day<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"> (Poetry Book Society Choice), <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">This Life, This Life: New &amp; Selected Poems 1970-2006<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"> and now <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">As Though We Were Flying<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"> (2011).&nbsp; His six novels include <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">In Another Light <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">(Weidenfeld<br \/>\n &amp; Nicolson, 2004), which was Saltire Scottish Book of the Year.
