{"id":278,"date":"2011-06-04T17:50:56","date_gmt":"2011-06-04T17:50:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=278"},"modified":"2011-06-04T17:50:56","modified_gmt":"2011-06-04T17:50:56","slug":"christina-murphys-broken-windows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/christina-murphys-broken-windows\/","title":{"rendered":"Christina Murphy&#39;s &#39;Broken Windows&#39;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Broken Windows<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><\/font><font style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\" size=\"1\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">All this and not ordinary, not unordered in not resembling.<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The difference is spreading.<\/span> \u2014Gertrude Stein (Tender Buttons)<\/font><font size=\"2\"><font size=\"1\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><\/font><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Stein and Picasso would sit by the window and watch the street scenes.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cGertrude,\u201d Picasso would say, \u201cthe windows are windows, but art is the<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">composition of broken windows\u2014which only Cubism can capture in<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">multiple perspectives and no perspectives, only the experience of re-ordering.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cYes,\u201d Stein would say, \u201clanguage is like that, too, and all objects designed to<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">give information do not give information by the experience of knowing. That is,<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">if the poet knows that truth lies in the deconstructing of the information.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cWhat is seen in language through broken windows?\u201d Picasso asked.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cFrames of perception,\u201d Stein replied. <\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cFragments?\u201d Picasso inquired.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cFragments to be recombined. The permutations are endless.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cAll meaning lies in the permutations. That is the essence of Cubism.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cYes,\u201d Stein replied. \u201cAnd language is a broken window, too, in which<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">seeing is not what it appears to be.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cReality is always a re-evaluation,\u201d Picasso said.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cIt is indeed an agreement of terms. If we agree that eert is a tree,<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">it is for now and forever. Call it into question, Pablo, and the world<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">of agreement is transformed.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cShatter the conventional descriptions, eh?\u201d Picasso said.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cTo see what lies within.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cAh, that is if anything does.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cYes, most language is blind. There is no seeing into or out of.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Stein reached for the carafe on the table. \u201cYou see this glass is blind.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">It does not reflect, it is unto itself a self, there is no world there.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Such is reality, but we agree not to accept that emptiness and so<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">we fill the blind glass with images and call it Reality.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cShattering the glass reveals some truth, does it not?\u201d he asks.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cIndeed. The fitting together of the pieces that is more<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">real than the pieces themselves or the original design.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Picasso said, \u201cI have broken the windows of art and created Cubism<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">as a way to show that wholeness in perspective is a lie.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Stein said, \u201cAnd I have done the same with language.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Objects are not objects, information is not information,<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">there is only the experience of the world, <\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">and that is always open to questions and change.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Stein poured red wine for Picasso from a dark green bottle.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cTo broken windows,\u201d she said.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cAnd fragments seeking never to be whole,\u201d Picasso said.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cOh how the difference is spreading,\u201d Stein said.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cRipped from context, freed of the taint of lingering definitions.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">\u201cAh yes,\u201d Picasso said. \u201cThe difference is spreading, indeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">*Christina Murphy<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"> says she &#8220;writes primarily prose poems&#8211;many of which, if&nbsp;typed into paragraphs,&nbsp;might be considered flash fictions.
