Harpist<\/span>

More animal than angel, that look<\/span>
in his eyes; kestrel, say \u2013 <\/span>
the way, hunched forward<\/span>
on the small wooden stool,<\/span>

he might have caught sight<\/span>
of something far beyond our vision,<\/span>
suddenly borne up<\/span>
by those flurrying, horn-hard fingers.<\/span>


Summer Bruises<\/span>

They would come up like targets<\/span>
on the inside of your thigh,<\/span>
their mottled purples <\/span>
fading through the rainbow, spilling out<\/span>
from the traumatised core \u2013 <\/span>
a squashed red circle of flesh, bisected<\/span>
with twin dotted lines: the imprinted seam<\/span>
of hurled, hard leather.<\/span>

Brands of a sort, or war-wounds,<\/span>
to be inspected and tended<\/span>
amid smells of liniment and linseed, <\/span>
stale sweat and damp towels.<\/span>
They spoke of making your mark;<\/span>
standing your ground. <\/span>
