{"id":2622,"date":"2012-06-03T16:29:00","date_gmt":"2012-06-03T16:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=2622"},"modified":"2012-06-03T16:29:00","modified_gmt":"2012-06-03T16:29:00","slug":"robert-herbert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/robert-herbert\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Herbert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&#8220;Honestly, we are all children of God&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Day before Christmas Eve fell on Jehovah\u2019s rest day,<\/p>\n<p>I visit Pawprint.\u00a0 He is substantially medicated.<\/p>\n<p>Since my last visit he&#8217;s invested in an exotic aquarium.<\/p>\n<p>He still protects his shooter bong like an endangered species,<\/p>\n<p>and ingests his thrice daily dose of Kratom.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As empty in hunger as him full stop, I conjure a blurb about food.<\/p>\n<p>He offers me a bowl of lentils with wheaten bread.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Christianity\u2019s cud is chewed over smoked soap, a pot of Kratom tea.<\/p>\n<p>Pawprint decides dinosaur deniers are certifiable, but will be saved.<\/p>\n<p>There are evangelical magazines open on the table, certain pages marked.<\/p>\n<p>Vomit rises subsides in my oesophagus. \u201cChristmas shopping?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pawprint postulates.\u00a0 I dart impetuously to bathroom<\/p>\n<p>to flummox my gullet in gastronomical gushes,<\/p>\n<p>that lash squeamish splashes against a shudderless U-bend&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Open-eyed.\u00a0 Regurgitated amber colourstains this porcelain bowl I flush.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you alright in there Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAuch aye, Christmas Shopping?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I freewheel Da\u2019s 4&#215;4 down Ballymoney Hill to town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEither my leg or foot or these brakes aren\u2019t working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pawprint perpetually sneezes his body weight.\u00a0 We park at <em>Tesco<\/em>.\u00a0 I some-ways take to feet.<\/p>\n<p>Vomit rises subsides in my oesophagus.<\/p>\n<p>I purchase a banana to gutcomfort.<\/p>\n<p>Pawprint cries, can\u2019t say \u201cbanana\u201d<\/p>\n<p>for sake of some personal trauma,<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d soon learn concerned his brother,<\/p>\n<p>before heaven\u2019s gate, his body\u2019s last expulsion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My pores humlikechant humdrum airs, Pawprint befriends equestrians.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone collects a frozen turkey, my body is a turncoat to my mind.<\/p>\n<p>Pawprint buys his gifts in Poundland where I&#8217;m priced out,<\/p>\n<p>and spoilt for choice, on edge I\u2019ll cause a public scene, another innard purge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before passing Peeler station, traffic caught stationary, I eject,<\/p>\n<p>puke banana-ized bile at ironrust gates of Bannside Presbyterian Church.<\/p>\n<p>Holiday traffic gawks, no-one dares doot, all I taste is acidic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I collect a filamentflicker kinetic enough to drive Pawprint Home.<\/p>\n<p>Then my wobbly self.\u00a0 Riot boots splattered in experiment.<\/p>\n<p>My bed belches like an insidious black hole in my slumberchamber.<\/p>\n<p>My opiated brain is the event horizon. I, abreast my sunken hippocampal blues,<\/p>\n<p>as Pawprint prepares for Drogheda, for his first and last stint, in Pentecostal rehab.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Herbert<\/strong>&#8216;s debut collection, a sequence of poems entitled, <em>Thon Pangs!\u00a0 Thon Pangs!<\/em> is forthcoming from Knives Forks &amp; Spoons Press.
