How she goes<\/span>

And after all<\/span>
how goes she <\/span>forward<\/span>
when the wind blows in our face?<\/span>

Forces like clasping hands converge,<\/span>
Mark says – sail pushed sideways,<\/span>
keel resisting    <\/span>
                (braced by liquid tonnage)<\/span>
the outcome:<\/span>
as wet soap squeezed in the hand<\/span>
                             squirts forward\u2026<\/span>

And so we roll on<\/span>
time and tide and wind against us<\/span>
over wave after wave after wave;<\/span>

we go on<\/span>
                   breathing<\/span>
though every breath drives us back<\/span>

and who does not awake<\/span>
from time to time in broad daylight<\/span>
among on-coming fellow citizens,<\/span>
feel the pressure,<\/span>
         and then himself leaping<\/span>
                             forward and free?<\/span>
