Brood<\/span>

The pigeon is nesting in the hawthorn.<\/span>
If I lift my eyes from the lap top screen<\/span>
I can see her sitting on a mess of sticks.<\/span>
She watches me closely, cocks her head,<\/span>
as if the sound of the keys were visible,<\/span>
small fears to put her on the edge of flight.<\/span>
She sits whilst I sit, whilst the rain falls,<\/span>
she sits through cold brightness, the dark.<\/span>

Out there a clutch of the future warms <\/span>
under the press and nestle of feathers.<\/span>
The hours heat my lap, word by word,<\/span>
as my fingers peck. She waits it out,<\/span>
I type on, both of us tuned for a crack,<\/span>
the moment when something opens.<\/span>

\u2028because, though winter dragged, a slow spring saved them from\u2028<\/span>
the frost. Like you, they\u2019d waited in the dark so long<\/span>
\u2028perhaps they doubted that their cue would ever come.\u2028<\/span>
But look at you now, half grown, playing in the sun,<\/span>
\u2028rampant in this tree where our bright blooms celebrate<\/span>
\u2028the light in pinkly fat profusion. So. Now you're here<\/span>
\u2028and every blossom too, though all of you came late:<\/span>
\u2028more loved for being born at last, and worth the wait.<\/span>
