The kids are watching<br \/>\nthrough the window over breakfast.<br \/>\nI\u2019m just doing the final moves:<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Bright Rainbow Soaring to the Sun,<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Lying Tiger Diving Dragon,<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Plum Blossom Opens Five Petals,<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">Celestial Horse Walks the Skies\u2026<br \/>\nwhen Luke opens the back door<br \/>\nand lobs the sprout stalk at my head.<br \/>\n\u2018Watch out, Dad,\u2019 he says. Now \u2013 breakfast.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cliff Yates<\/strong>&#8216; various collections include Henry&#8217;s Clock, which received the Fenton-Aldeburgh First Collection Prize and was overall winner of the Poetry Business Book &amp; Pamphlet Competition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>At Christmas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">All Easyjet flights<br \/>\nare cancelled \u2013 only<br \/>\ndifficult journeys now.<br \/>\nThree in party hats<br \/>\ncome dragging their presents<br \/>\nover a snowy car park.<br \/>\nA few attendants shepherd<br \/>\nthem into a building:<br \/>\nthe call to desert places.<br \/>\nLooking up for a moving<br \/>\nlight or at Sky<br \/>\nNews. Stasis over<br \/>\nthe business empires.<br \/>\nA child has made an angel<br \/>\nby the automatic barrier<br \/>\nand a mother feeds her baby.<br \/>\nThis breathtaking, breath-<br \/>\nmaking fall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>John Greening<\/strong> is a Cholmondeley, Bridport &amp; TLS Prize winner, he&#8217;s published over fifteen collections, including in 2019 <em>The Silence<\/em> (Carcanet) <em>and Europa&#8217;s Flight (<\/em>New Walk). He is currently editing Iain Crichton Smith <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johngreening.co.uk\/\">www.johngreening.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Down times<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Down Times<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No cake, this time.<br \/>\nOnions 140 a kilo.<br \/>\nEat bread someone said, no cake.<\/p>\n<p>We circle the crust with chocolate<br \/>\nBorrowed from the nearby store.<br \/>\nColour the insides &#8211; brown, deep brown, black.<\/p>\n<p>Punch holes for eyes,<br \/>\nA curve of sun for a smile<br \/>\nBut forget to toast, bread or sunshine.<\/p>\n<p>This time, those to call my own<br \/>\nAre with me.<br \/>\nThat is cake.<\/p>\n<p>The whole world is a friend<br \/>\nThis time.<br \/>\nEven that pig nuzzling against my door<\/p>\n<p>Asking to be in, this cold dawn.<br \/>\nI was dreaming &#8211; onions, milk, a whole month\u2019s supplies<br \/>\nAnd a little note saying &#8211; don\u2019t give up- from Santa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amlanjyoti Goswami<\/strong>\u2019s poetry has been published around the world, in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, the UK, USA, South Africa, Kenya and Germany, and in the anthologies, 4<em>0 under 40: An Anthology of Post Globalisation Poetry<\/em> (Poetrywala), <em>A Change of Climate<\/em> (Manchester Metropolitan University, Environmental Justice Foundation and the University of Edinburgh) and the Sahitya Akademi anthology of Modern English Poetry. His poems have also appeared on street walls of Christchurch, exhibitions in Johannesburg and buses in Philadelphia. His recent collection of poems, <em>River Wedding<\/em>, has just been published by Poetrywala and has been widely reviewed.
