The Envy of Cleopatra<\/span>
 <\/span>
The kohl painted eyes of Cleopatra<\/span>
would flash to darkest green<\/span>
if they could ever see<\/span>
the top of my lover\u2019s head<\/span>
tanned and shiny, like a beautiful nut<\/span>
as it is bowed to me<\/span>
not as he brings gifts from many lands,<\/span>
or in displays of humility<\/span>
or in supplication <\/span>
but in the greater reverence<\/span>
of tying up my shoes.<\/span>




*Julia Groves<\/span> is aged sixty and has been writing poetry since she was 8. 
\n During her working life she wrote funny poems for events for her
\nworkmates.  She has been attending Helen Ivory\u2019s poetry class for the
\nlast two years.  This has broadened the scope of her poetry
\nconsiderably.  In 2008 she had a brain hemorrhage but was lucky enough
\nto be left with only slight disabilities hence the need for her
\nhusband\u2019s help with her shoes.<\/span>
