\nheart, leaky valve long scorched. Forget
\nthe unthinking arm that fell on my shoulder,
\nthose times we crossed the M6 flyover
\nand you drove with one hand on the wheel
\nand I\u2019d change gear, rather badly. Forget
\nthe mix-tape, its erratic path through
\nteenage years, the growing up, beers, larking
\nabout on bridges and piers and dancing
\nall night in the Zap Club. Forget the sea
\nand its snub-nosed wall, the hiss of shingle
\non sand, the plans we made at 2am
\nto be bruised by life. Forget the headlamps
\ndimming on the Downs, the uphill walks,
\nthe drinks in the Nelson, Trafalgar Street,
\nthe way your heart beat. And beat. Remember
\nthe dull ring of my doorbell, the slight tap
\non glass, the way my stomach flipped when
\nI knew you were there, before you arrived.
\nRemember what longing means, the thick taste
\nof Milky Bars for breakfast, the crack of your elbow
\nbroken on the stairs at 4am, the thud of your step
\nacross floorboards. Remember how in that crowd
\nwe found each other\u2019s silence, feathered it out,
\nknowing we might make it from friends to lovers
\nand friends again. Remember how we felt that night
\nwhen we each held our breaths, met under
\nan invisible sky. Remember how we said
\nwhen you died, I\u2019d try to forget.<\/p>\n
