She clutches her handbag<\/p>\n<p>straining to hear the barrister<br \/>\nas he discusses each count<\/p>\n<p>and the custodial guidelines.<br \/>\nYou listen to the judge\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>summing up, thinking about<br \/>\nhow you will avoid the truth<\/p>\n<p>how you will skirt over the facts<br \/>\nif she asks. For you know<\/p>\n<p>his mother probably hears more than she lets on<br \/>\nselective hearing makes the truth<\/p>\n<p>that much easier to swallow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachel Burns<\/strong> has poetry published in <em>Crannog, Poetry Salzburg Review, Algebra of Owl<\/em>s and is anthologized in <em>Poems for Grenfell Tower, Poems for the NHS <\/em>and<em> #MeToo<\/em>.
