He has recently had\u00a0poems\u00a0published in <em>Ink Sweat &amp; Tears,\u00a0The\u00a0Poetry\u00a0Shed,\u00a0Snakeskin,\u00a0Picaroon\u00a0Poetry\u00a0<\/em>and<em>\u00a0Algebra of Owls<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Note: This poem first appeared in <em>London Grip<\/em> in Spring 2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drawing the Lines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not making it up.<br \/>\nSocks edging along<br \/>\nthe washing line, pinks<br \/>\nand a thousand tiny creases<br \/>\non bedclothes, shattering<br \/>\nlike autumn sea,<br \/>\nor say the split<br \/>\nrunning into fractures<br \/>\nthrough hot summer earth.<br \/>\nI could no more make it up<br \/>\nthan that child in the shop,<br \/>\nnear the magazines,<br \/>\ncould walk on purpose<br \/>\nso convincingly like a child;<br \/>\nlegs tensed at the knee,<br \/>\narms awkwardly placed<br \/>\naway from the body as if<br \/>\nhe were preparing<br \/>\nto walk on ice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carolyn Oulton<\/strong> is Professor of Victorian Literature and Programme Lead for Creative and Professional Writing at Canterbury Christ Church University.
