Ancient hands<br \/>\nreach out to us from ice through melting rings:<br \/>\nour histories disinterred from broken land.<\/p>\n<p>Revenants with their bronze-age seeds, knapped flints,<br \/>\nvague hints of trade, origins, signs of plague.<br \/>\nAnother hottest-summer-yet reveals<br \/>\nhieroglyphs embossed across the dusty fields:<\/p>\n<p>earthworks, long barrows, some chieftain\u2019s chilly tomb;<br \/>\nthe migrant tucked into his alpine womb\u2019s<br \/>\nshucked out unborn, as glaciers puddle into light.<\/p>\n<p>The ice caps calve, the seas and vapours rise;<br \/>\nmethane\u2019s unlocking from its frozen sink.<br \/>\nThink things unleashed, the new abnormal, watch laden skies\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cliff Forshaw<\/strong> has been writer-in-residence in California, France, Kyrgizstan, Romania and Tasmania, twice a Hawthornden Writing Fellow, and appeared at the International Poetry Festival, Nicaragua.
