Tears<\/em> is, once again, the proud supporter of today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uea.ac.uk\/fly\/programme\/wednesday-poetry-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Poetry Day<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uea.ac.uk\/fly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UEA\u2019s Festival Of Literature for Young People (FLY)<\/a>\u00a0 and we are also very pleased to be able to bring you the winners of 2019\u2019s writing competition which this year was exclusively devoted to Poetry.\u00a0 The theme was a poem of any length beginning with the word &#8216;Afterwards&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Judges Jeremy Noel-Tod, Lewis Buxton and Jos Smith received so many poems that they had long discussions before deciding the final winners.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of the 12\u201314 category and the overall winner is: <strong>Rebekah Bongers <\/strong>from Reigate Grammar School.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFTERWARDS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards.<br \/>\nAfter the party.<br \/>\nCups shoved into plastic bags.<br \/>\nBalloons let down, discarded.<br \/>\nEmpty packets line the swelling bin.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards.<br \/>\nThe next morning.<br \/>\nRubbish truck shunts into view.<br \/>\nBags swung in.<br \/>\nDrives off to next collection.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards.<br \/>\nTruck overloaded.<br \/>\nSo much waste for one area.<br \/>\nPulling into temporary home.<br \/>\nLandfill.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards.<br \/>\nSeagulls screech in excitement.<br \/>\nRubbish pours onto the heap.<br \/>\nSoon torn apart by crazed birds.<br \/>\nMountains of waste.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards.<br \/>\nPlastic bottles crushed together.<br \/>\nSmall packets roll around.<br \/>\nPlastic bags blow everywhere.<br \/>\nStraining to be free.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards.<br \/>\nSeveral bags escape.<br \/>\nSpread everywhere.<br \/>\nOne is caught by a crying gull.<br \/>\nAnother is blown into a forest.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards.<br \/>\nOne falls into the sea.<br \/>\nTossed by large waves.<br \/>\nTravels far and wide.<br \/>\nA painful trap.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards.<br \/>\nShoals of fish swerve in unison.<br \/>\nSharks avoid the bright plastic..<br \/>\nTurtle swims to it cautiously.<br \/>\nMistake.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards.<br \/>\nWhat happens afterwards?<br \/>\nWe kill animals.<br \/>\nWe put that bag in the bin.<br \/>\nThink twice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The runner up in the 12-14 yr old category is<strong> Megan Valerie-Cooke<\/strong> from Wymondham High Academy.<\/p>\n<p>The winning poem for the 15-18 yr old group will be featured on IS&amp;T tomorrow and the runner up announced.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ink Sweat &amp;
