Ink Sweat & Tears<\/em> is, once again, the proud supporter of today’s Poetry Day<\/a> at UEA\u2019s Festival Of Literature for Young People (FLY)<\/a>\u00a0 and we are also very pleased to be able to bring you the winners of 2019\u2019s writing competition which this year was exclusively devoted to Poetry.\u00a0 The theme was a poem of any length beginning with the word ‘Afterwards’.<\/p>\n

Judges Jeremy Noel-Tod, Lewis Buxton and Jos Smith received so many poems that they had long discussions before deciding the final winners.<\/p>\n

The winner of the 12\u201314 category and the overall winner is: Rebekah Bongers <\/strong>from Reigate Grammar School.<\/p>\n

AFTERWARDS.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Afterwards.
\nAfter the party.
\nCups shoved into plastic bags.
\nBalloons let down, discarded.
\nEmpty packets line the swelling bin.<\/p>\n

Afterwards.
\nThe next morning.
\nRubbish truck shunts into view.
\nBags swung in.
\nDrives off to next collection.<\/p>\n

Afterwards.
\nTruck overloaded.
\nSo much waste for one area.
\nPulling into temporary home.
\nLandfill.<\/p>\n

Afterwards.
\nSeagulls screech in excitement.
\nRubbish pours onto the heap.
\nSoon torn apart by crazed birds.
\nMountains of waste.<\/p>\n

Afterwards.
\nPlastic bottles crushed together.
\nSmall packets roll around.
\nPlastic bags blow everywhere.
\nStraining to be free.<\/p>\n

Afterwards.
\nSeveral bags escape.
\nSpread everywhere.
\nOne is caught by a crying gull.
\nAnother is blown into a forest.<\/p>\n

Afterwards.
\nOne falls into the sea.
\nTossed by large waves.
\nTravels far and wide.
\nA painful trap.<\/p>\n

Afterwards.
\nShoals of fish swerve in unison.
\nSharks avoid the bright plastic..
\nTurtle swims to it cautiously.
\nMistake.<\/p>\n

Afterwards.
\nWhat happens afterwards?
\nWe kill animals.
\nWe put that bag in the bin.
\nThink twice.<\/p>\n

The runner up in the 12-14 yr old category is Megan Valerie-Cooke<\/strong> from Wymondham High Academy.<\/p>\n
