{"id":19357,"date":"2019-06-18T08:00:01","date_gmt":"2019-06-18T08:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=19357"},"modified":"2019-06-12T12:28:34","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T12:28:34","slug":"19357","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/19357\/","title":{"rendered":"Sarah Barr"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Orchids<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They are guilt-inducing like unwanted pets.<br \/>\nNot being completely heartless,<br \/>\nI water them every few months<br \/>\nover spring and summer.<br \/>\nOtherwise, I neglect and starve them.<\/p>\n<p>They reduce to thin brown sticks.<br \/>\nI wait for them to find their own way out<br \/>\nonto the compost heap,<br \/>\ntheir pots into the recycling bin.<\/p>\n<p>Nine months of near-death, and a few buds appear,<br \/>\nstems, more fat buds, which I ignore.<br \/>\nTheir growth is persistent.<br \/>\nI transfer them to the kitchen window-sill.<br \/>\nA few drops of plant-food, that\u2019s all.<\/p>\n<p>Their waxy heads multiply, purple-veined<br \/>\nor white-rimmed, with pointed tongues,<br \/>\ndotty eyes, and lemon kitten faces.<br \/>\nThey all nod down at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Don\u2019t leave us,\u2019 they whisper.<br \/>\nI learn there are more of them on earth<br \/>\nthan birds, or fish or mammals.<br \/>\nI polish their succulent greenery,<br \/>\nstroke them, ask their permission to go.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sarah Barr<\/strong> lives in Dorset and writes poetry and fiction.
