{"id":19354,"date":"2019-06-17T08:00:54","date_gmt":"2019-06-17T08:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=19354"},"modified":"2019-06-17T08:20:41","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T08:20:41","slug":"laura-rimmer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/laura-rimmer\/","title":{"rendered":"Laura Rimmer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>My First-Born<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When my first-born was formed in my womb,<br \/>\nshe called up to me for seven long weeks<br \/>\nbut I didn\u2019t listen<\/p>\n<p>\u2019til the tiredness brought me down.<br \/>\nFour tests I took, unseeing each pair of parallel lines,<br \/>\n\u2019til I was eating wine gums<\/p>\n<p>for breakfast, dinner, and tea.<br \/>\nShe danced a jig for my birthday,<br \/>\nand when I was building her cot \u2013<\/p>\n<p>eight months gone \u2013 she cheered me on,<br \/>\neven as I struggled to keep it together.<br \/>\nWe watched Doctors<\/p>\n<p>curled up in the sun, settling into each other,<br \/>\nso much so she extended her stay by twelve days.<br \/>\nShe was sucked out of me, this limpet,<\/p>\n<p>blue-lipped from the tightly-wound cord,<br \/>\nand the paediatrician said, \u2018You were lucky.\u2019<br \/>\nShe studied my face,<\/p>\n<p>her velvet head bloodied and smelling of home,<br \/>\nand I studied her face for the first time.<br \/>\nMy stomach was slack<\/p>\n<p>and I felt like I\u2019d lost her, but here she was, winking at me.<br \/>\nSo I took her home to watch Doctors,<br \/>\nand then we curled up in the sun.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laura Rimmer<\/strong> was born in Liverpool but now lives in rural Scotland where she works as a writer, editor, and women\u2019s sector volunteer.
