When you read comments such as &#8216;t<span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">he most beautiful, heart rending poem ever&#8217; and &#8216;it is an uplifting poem, simple, direct and moving&#8217; &#8211; and these are just two of the many you will see below &#8211; you really do see the effect of this amazing work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Emma has been writing for many years and published poetry in magazines and journals including T<em>he Lampeter Review, Roundyhouse, Cambria<\/em> and<em> POEM<\/em>. In 2011, she edited and contributed to <em>The Month had 32 Days<\/em>, published by Parthian and has read at festivals and events including the Laugharne Weekend. She also travelled to Ireland on the Coracle literary exchange. Emma has has translated work (from Welsh to English) for Menna Elfyn and her own writing has recently been included in installation by glass artist Linda Norris. This year, she has co-founded a writers group in Pembrokeshire and is currently facilitating poetry workshops to create films based on the Women of West Wales for Llangwm Literary Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Emma has asked that her \u00a310 &#8216;prize&#8217; be donated to the breast cancer awareness charity <a href=\"https:\/\/coppafeel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CoppaFeel!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vital Signs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We laughed,<br \/>\nin spite of the darkness,<br \/>\nat the circles around your eyes.<\/p>\n<p>and you rolled them<br \/>\nover hand-knitted hats<br \/>\nin the chemo ward,<br \/>\nto cover things we tried to hide.<\/p>\n<p>when I shaved your head<br \/>\nand the last of your hair<br \/>\nfell in your lap, you beamed.<\/p>\n<p>as I showered you,<br \/>\nfresh from surgery,<br \/>\nand you carried your drain<br \/>\nin a floral bag; we joked.<\/p>\n<p>when you unzipped a new breast;<br \/>\npocketed a new you,<br \/>\nwe poked fun at all things false.<\/p>\n<p>but when you smiled from the scanner<br \/>\na truth was told:<br \/>\nhow your bones glow<br \/>\nis beyond the measure of science.<\/p>\n<p>now life is given<br \/>\nits last chance to impress you,<br \/>\nfrom the bottom of us;<br \/>\nwe laugh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Voters&#8217; comments included:<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">This poem gets my vote because of its tenderness, the light it shines on love and intimacy. It tells the dark light as Kei Miller would say. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">A poem with great feeling, understanding, compassion and warmth. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">The light touch of the language contrasted to the subject. It reads as a poem for me. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">A very insightful, accessible poem. It has an optimism and strength associated with the sufferers of this sad condition. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">It&#8217;s such a moving poem &#8212; one that everyone can recognise but as it draws to a close it reaches a new realm of love beyond the detritus and heartbreak of lives <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Shows complete empathy of a very difficult situation. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Its a beautiful poem, written from the heart, and made me feel that I was there&#8230; <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">The exquisite sensibility and sensitivity of the writing. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Not only through her writing she\u2019s beautiful inside and out. She written for years, but just needs to be noticed for what she\u2019s amazing at doing! She deserves this<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Such an endearing poem representing a journey had by so many. Inspiring and heartfelt <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Beautifully written as an expression of a truly difficult time emotionally. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Because this is a sensationally beautiful poem about a difficult and emotive subject. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">A wonderful poem born out of sadness but with a strong message of hope and love. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">It&#8217;s touching and sensitive but also has warmth, humour and humanity in it. Loved it. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">This poem is just so beautiful and well measured between the mundane and the profound. I will not forget it. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Emma\u2019s poem is tender and strong at the same time.
