I can hear<br \/>\nthe song from the musical playing intermittently<br \/>\non a loop. A happy-clappy, golden era song<br \/>\ndesigned to cheer people up after the war<br \/>\nand it reminds me of the films I watched<br \/>\nwith my grandfather as a child.<\/p>\n<p>We had thirteen at dinner today<br \/>\ntwelve chairs and a high chair<br \/>\nand I tried not to be superstitious<br \/>\neven when your mother refused to pull<br \/>\nthe wishbone. I know she passes on making a wish<br \/>\nevery year and it has nothing to do with the cancer<br \/>\nor chemo or being sick.<\/p>\n<p>The baby laughs and hand waves to a song<br \/>\nshe remembers\u00a0and everyone laughs<br \/>\nand hand waves with her<br \/>\nso she does it even more.<\/p>\n<p>The television is stuck on a loop<br \/>\nthe trailer from the musical, playing over and over<br \/>\nhappy-clappy, golden era.<br \/>\nI should go down and switch it off<br \/>\nbut I\u2019m scared of the white noise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachel Burns<\/strong> has poetry published in <em>Crannog<\/em>, <em>Poetry Salzburg Review,<\/em> <em>Algebra of Owls<\/em> and is anthologized in <em>Poems for Grenfell Tower,<\/em> <em>Poems for the NHS<\/em> and <em>#MeToo<\/em>.
