She is Associate Editor for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookes.ac.uk\/poetry-centre\/ignition-press\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>ignition<\/b><\/a>press, and is currently a part-time practice-based PhD student at Royal Holloway, University of London studying poetry and disaster.<\/p>\n<p>She has asked that her \u00a310 &#8216;prize&#8217; be donated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbhcharity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Brompton &amp; Harefield Hospitals Charity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The card given out at his funeral<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>has no obituary. No order of service.<br \/>\nJust his name, curlicued and slant,<br \/>\nyear of birth, hyphen, year of death.<\/p>\n<p>Above that, an old print plate of his<br \/>\nreproduced landscape-wise, its surface<br \/>\nsectioned into eighths, each eighth quizzing<\/p>\n<p>depth of cut, luminescence, blackness,<br \/>\nhow acid bites, how resin resists.<br \/>\n\u2018Fig. A\u2019 points to pale ripples:<\/p>\n<p>a thumbprint in negative,<br \/>\ndabbed there momentarily \u2013<br \/>\nhis brief experiment in flesh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*********<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other voters&#8217; comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Hit me in the heart &#8211; understated, interesting use of language &#8230; her poem stayed with me the most&#8230; e.g. how we are all but &#8216;a short experiment in flesh&#8217;. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Beautiful, restrained and powerful<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">I like its economy and unexpectedness. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">I love this poem&#8217;s allusiveness, its brevity, its poignance. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Oh the sadness. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">A surprising, and beautifully detailed memorial to the printmaker. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Such a gentle reverie and homily of a lost much loved one. Gentle, spiritual, thoughtful and with grace <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">The simplicity of the form and language allows the grief to speak forth without rhetoric. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">simply written yet finely crafted <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">A brief but recognisable representation of a life. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Beautifully written and resonant. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">An extraordinary poem- superbly crafted <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">I liked the baldness of the opening stanza and the concreteness of details. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\"><em>It tells a story, but in a stark way.
