His voice low, rather hoarse.<br \/>\nHere and there, he paused; his speech<br \/>\nslow, affecting a sadness I wasn\u2019t to know.<br \/>\nLong-distance call. Not unexpected. The usual.<br \/>\nWhen will you come and visit? (I\u2019d no plan to go.)<br \/>\n<em>Where you are \u2015 is it not cold?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The voice, hesitant, disembodied, but I could<br \/>\nsee his wrinkled face before my eyes.<br \/>\nI was all ears, straining over thousands of miles<br \/>\nof under-ocean fibre-optic lines, as if he was just<br \/>\nsitting across from me, chatting awhile. A voice<br \/>\nso familiar; a voice that told me what to cook and<br \/>\nhow to cook it; a voice that talked about cousins<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t know, whose name my mind couldn\u2019t hold;<br \/>\na voice of being old.<\/p>\n<p>The next time I saw him, he didn\u2019t see <em>me<\/em>.<br \/>\nHis eyes moved, but his mind couldn\u2019t;<br \/>\nhis body was there, but he wasn\u2019t;<br \/>\nhe still made noises, but no voice.<br \/>\nI sat beside his bed, holding his hand, trying<br \/>\nto keep <em>him<\/em> in my mind, trying to bargain with time.<\/p>\n<p>The last time he called me by my name, his voice was<br \/>\nlow and slow \u2015 nothing much said, nothing significant.<br \/>\nThat was the last time he called me, long-distance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chin Li<\/strong>, brought up in Hong Kong but now living in Scotland, has published work in <em>Confluence<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/glasgowreviewofbooks.com\/2015\/11\/06\/beyond-the-garden-a-love-story-a-short-story-by-chin-li\/\"><em>Glasgow Review of Books<\/em><\/a>,<em> Gnommero<\/em>,<em> Gutter<\/em>,<em> Ink Sweat &amp; Tears<\/em>,<em> Litro <\/em>and<em> MAP<\/em>, and has turned some writings into audio\/performance pieces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A long-distance voice\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 That was the last time he called me by my name.
